Everyone wants to be heard
Bisrat Okubamichael
17 Apr 2008

Since I was introduced to the tools, principles, and passions of the InterAction Leadership programme, I am filled with hope, enthusiasm, and confidence to overcome the challenges we Africans have.

I have worked in private, government and non-government organisations for about ten years.  However, I never felt that I played a leadership role in the community in which I was involved.  Since I joined the InterAction leadership programme, I have been enabled to recognise my leadership role and to value my contribution to my communities, this is the "me passion".  Since I was introduced to the tools, principles, and passions of the programme, I am filled with hope, enthusiasm, and confidence to overcome the challenges we Africans have.

I have learnt that individual input can make a difference and when these individual roles are interlinked they can bring very huge and dynamic change.

The six passions, the seven principles, the TICing model and other tools in the programme have helped me develop confidence in my leadership career. I have found these tools very practical and workable for everyone. Today, I am not afraid of holding a leadership position, which has a great deal of challenges; that is "the leadership passion".

Creating a positive environment

The programme has enabled me to value the language I use.  In this regard I feel that I have made a substantial improvement. Whenever I have conversations with community members  I feel proud, and I feel more human. After joining this programme I often give a priority to my community members to give their perspectives because I have learnt that the voices of others are an important tool to facilitate the change we are aspiring to.

I am also changed in the way I challenge others, I find the "Power of Questions" a workable tool to speak my views and challenge others without offending them. One day after I joined the programme we spent a hard time to try to reach consensus on some burning issue for our community. Everyone wanted to be heard and to prove that his or her idea is more important than others.

I took the lead and I asked everyone what they want to be, and we discussed in-depth the views.  Because everyone's idea has some important point we came up with a very brilliant new idea, which is to summarise the views of the members. This means that from the different possibilities we can craft a new possibility. So I have decided to create an environment where everyone can share his/her views in my leadership journey.
