The InterAction programme helps
Mekonnen Hailemariam
19 Apr 2008
The concept I've benefited from most in the InterAction Leadership Programme is that of reframing, says Mekonnen Hailemariam.
Reframing
When I visited the Mary Joy Aid organisation during the community visit, I had had the chance to meet the children in the community. As we were talking to them, exploring their vision and dreams, I was very impressed and touched by Kassa, a depressed youngster.
Kassa was about 17-years-old and a ninth grade student. He benefited from the Mary Joy for nine years. He'd been earning 90 Birr a month (£5), as well as 50kg of wheat flour and one litre of oil per month. He was also academically clever, and yet he felt frustrated because he knew that next year he wouldn't be benefiting from the donations any more, as he would turn 18. On top of that, he was afraid that his relative would not allow him to live with him any longer.
Kassa thus decided to go for a college diploma, rather than a degree, despite his academic capacities.
After hearing his story, I felt I could contribute in the reframing. I mentioned that he only had two years to go to make it to university, that he's already endured many challenges and problems. My friends joined me in the conversation and contributed by bringing a positive attitudinal change in Kassa's mind.
Kassa did get reframed: he's promised us to become determined to succeed and to plan for it. He's taken the decision to join the university! All this is thanks to what I've learned in the InterAction programme!
